Evolution of a Character

So I am trying to design a child version of the best mascot ever, Aubie, the Auburn Tiger. It has been tricky working on this because there are certain trademarked features of the adult Aubie that have to be present in the child Aubie.

The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me

So I am re-designing the cover for an existing book by Roald Dahl called “The Giraffe the Pelly and Me”

It is a super-cute book about the “ladderless window cleaning company” that consists of a monkey, a pelican, and a giraffe. The meet a young boy and eventually get a lifetime gig of cleaning windows for the Duke at the Hampshire mansion.

So I got some advice to add pieces with children and animals interacting to my portfolio so I did 7 very strong personalities… the seven deadly sins… all at a birthday party. Below is the line drawing. I am painting it in acrylic now but I think the final piece will be digital.

limerick illustration which I had originally done in black and white for a class. I decided to reuse this same line drawing to try my hand at electronic illustration because I wanted to see it in color.

“There was a young lady whose bonnet

Great Zaratan Myth

According to the Native American Iroquois Tribe, The Earth was created when a woman was thrown down from the heavens. The animals below made her a place to live by spreading mud from the depths of the ocean onto the shell of a great Zaratan. Since then, the island has grown and grown to the size of North America as we know it today.

Made out of cut paper and tissue streamers with my own handmade textures.

I plan to clone out the hand-written text because it is a little sloppy. I might replace it with digital text.

Fish. Hot. Crown.

As a last project for Materials and Techniques I, we had to pull three words out of an envelope. I got “Hot”, “Fish”, and “Crown”. I had to illustrate these 3 words with collage materials. This is what I came up with. I hope she makes you laugh .

Another Collage Experiment

The Collective Noun Collage Project. My letter was M so I chose to do a Mischief of Mice- They are stealing strawberries.

I got the Internship!

So I found out Wednesday that I made it into the Working Class Studio summer internship. It is a division of SCAD where a team of designers is chosen to create products to sell in stores across the globe. I am really excited to get some experience in this kind of work. I have been so focused on childrens’ book illustration and I need to be diverse and branch out to other design fields. I am also eager to be working in a team because I feel it will be good for me in many ways. Check out the Working Class Studio’s website to see what I’ll be doing.

Also, The day of the interview, I did a few more patterns to sneak into the portfolio I left with them. I have yet to photograph the handmade pattern I put on the front of the book but will include that once I get it back.

I also wanted to share some character designs I have been working on for my Intro to Illu class. I am pretty happy with how they look but if I have time I may resolve them a bit more. They are done by painting acrylic over tissue paper for some texture and the costumes I have been creating digitally in photoshop. The assignment was to create six characters for a circus. I was thinking along the lines of a flea circus and decided to do a circus of dogs. I have the ringmaster which is supposed to look like my friend’s german shephard. I have the acrobat. I have the elephant/english bulldog. The clown is drawn after my friend’s corgi puppy. There is the schnauzer bearded lady. And finally, my dog, Frankie is the ballerina/tight rope walker. It is not included here but the acrobat’s swing is a bone with ropes tied to it. :-P

Patterns

Working on a few patterns for my portfolio because I got an interview to intern with the Working Class Studio. I plan to do 4-8 different patterns.

So I have come up with a new collage technique that I am very excited to experiment with. Check out this quick example I did and tell me what you think.

Anti-Puppy Mills Poster Design

We were told to make a poster about something we are passionate about for my intro to illustration class. This is what I came up with for a anti-puppy mill campaign.

I am very new to digital art and I know this is a little rough.

Tell me if the urine looks green or yellow. I meant for it to be yellow but it looks different on different screens.

New Sketchbook!

I got a new sketchbook and its gotten me excited about drawing from life again. Here a few. I plan to color them all.

Limerick Sketches

I am illustrating one of Edward Lear's limericks.
It goes...

There was a young lady whose bonnet

Came untied when the birds sat upon it
But she said, " I don't care
All the birds in the air
Are welcome to sit on my bonnet!"

So these are the two sketches. I am a bit torn between them. I like the horizontal one because of the trees fading off into the distance and that it has more story to it. I wanted the trees to look sad because the birds no longer want to sit on their branches. I think I could push this more by having more birds leaving the trees.
I like the portrait one because it is probably more eye-catching...?
Anyway, I plan to do both eventually but the majority of the class seemed to like the portrait so I will start with that one for the assignment due next week.

Character Styling

After drawing the quick cartoon of my little sister, Kylie, which you can find in a post below, I decided I really liked the way she was drawn.
I experimented with the basic face proportions that i used for her portrait and drew several other characters. What I ended up with are what I believe to be charming, lovable faces that I would love to continue to develop. I think this could be my "style" of drawing children.
After playing around with face shape, I decided to try some full-body drawings. Floating heads typically are not that child-friendly.
A problem I see in a lot of my work is that the people feel too static. I want to introduce more movement into my illustrations. Below, I used exaggerated gestures and blowing hair to try to accomplish this.
I am very happy with these experiments. I hope that I can push these ideas in the picture book I am about to begin. Please let me know your thoughts on these characters. Constructive criticism is always welcome.
